T-38 Talon: The World's First Supersonic Jet Trainer

The T-38 Talon is a twinjet supersonic jet trainer produced by American aerospace and defense company Northrop Grumman, and it first flew in 1959. The company built 1,187 T-38 twinjet trainer aircraft, and more than 72,000 USAF pilots have flown the T-38 since it entered service in 1961 when it was the world's first supersonic trainer. The aircraft was developed as a supersonic trainer to prepare pilots for high-performance fighter jets, and it quickly proved to be an effective platform for advanced flight training.

The T-38 Talon has a slender fuselage with a low-mounted, swept-wing design. Its powerful twin engines are mounted at the base of the wing, and it has a retractable landing gear. The T-38 has a top speed of Mach 1.3 and a service ceiling of 55,000 feet, making it one of the fastest and highest-flying trainer aircraft in the world.

The America's Last Gunfighter - Vought F-8 Crusader

The Vought F-8 Crusader feels like one of those aircraft. First flying in March 1955, the F-8 Crusader was one of the finest carried-based fighter jets to ever emerge from the United States. It earned the nickname “The Last of the Gunfighters” as it was the final American fighter built with guns as its primary weapon.

The Crusader was powered by a Pratt and Whitney J57 turbojet, with an afterburner, and it became the first jet fighter in United States service to reach 1,000 mph, which was an achievement in itself. Its top speed was an impressive 1,227 mph, or Mach 1.8.

It's amazing in itself that the F-8 was the last fighter built to have a gun as its primary armament. But it shows just how far weapons had evolved since the Second World War. The F-8, though, was one of the most recognizable aircraft of its era, and was effectively a poster boy for the US Navy aircraft fleet for the best part of 20 years. It proved its worth in combat on multiple occasions, and would go down in history as one of the most successful fighters ever built in America.

This is Why The F-35 Are Three Variants

The F-35 jet has three variants: the F-35A conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) variant, the F-35B short take-off and vertical landing (STOVL) variant, and the F-35C carrier variant (CV).

The three variants perform similarly and are mainly distinguished by their different basing requirements. As a result, the F-35B and F-35C have unique ways to take off and land - due to their requirements for short take-off and landing or landing on carriers.

Convair XF-92: The First American Delta-Winged Aircraft

The Convair XF-92 (re-designated from XP-92 in 1948) was an American, delta wing, first-generation jet prototype. Originally conceived as a point-defence interceptor, the design was later used purely for experimental purposes and only one was built. However, it led Convair to use the delta-wing on a number of designs, including the F-102 Delta Dagger, F-106 Delta Dart, B-58 Hustler, the US Navy's F2Y Sea Dart as well as the VTOL FY Pogo.

The aircraft was delivered to Muroc Air Force Base, California on April 1, 1958 and its first flight was far from impressive, and consisted of little more than an inadvertent hop during its high-speed taxi test—while its first true flight was made on September 18 of that year, which demonstrated the airworthiness of the radical design and its Phase I testing continued through August 1949.

6th Generation Fighters: The Stealth Fighter That Will Kill Anything?

A sixth-generation fighter is a conceptualized class of jet fighter aircraft design more advanced than the fifth-generation jet fighters that are currently in service and development. Several countries have announced the development of a sixth-generation aircraft program, including China, Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Spain, Russia and India.

The Sixth-Generation fighter developers can be divided into two categories: the United States, which has developed and deployed two stealth fighter types, and the countries that have skipped or given up on their attempt to build Fifth Generations jets. These latter countries focus on tomorrow's technology than try to catch up with today's.

America's Jet Fighter Assassin - F-111 Aardvark

The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark is a retired supersonic, medium-range, multirole combat aircraft. Production variants of the F-111 had roles that included ground attack (e.g. interdiction), strategic bombing (including nuclear weapons capabilities), reconnaissance and electronic warfare. Developed in the 1960s by General Dynamics, the F-111 entered service in 1967 with the United States Air Force (USAF). The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) also ordered the type and began operating the F-111C variant in 1973.

563 F-111s of all variants were built. After the F-111A, the F-111D and E models upgraded the Aardvark’s electronics and engine inlets, and increased the thrust of the engines. Another variant, the FB-111, was designed as a strategic bomber with improved engines, stretched two feet longer to accommodate additional fuel. Seventy-five of these served in Strategic Air Command units.
